Raised Garden Box @ Whole Earth
Reviving an old raised garden bed

Revived the venerable old garden box @ Whole Earth Center in Princeton, NJ in collaboration with Steven from Bountiful Boxes, and with the assistance of one of my cheerful mini-carpenters (my 10 year old son). Steven created this box years ago in honor of his friend, and local gardening hero Dorothy Mullen. The three of us had fun rebuilding it. First step was removing the old wood layer, revealing a perfectly coherent dirt cube. Then we simply built a new garden box around it, trying to not to disturb the dirt geology and create an avalanche.
Materials: cedar planks with white oak posts (intrinsically rot-resistant), finished with 50/50 authentic pine tar + purified de-gummed linseed oil on the inside and outside of the box. This traditional finish, from our neighbors down the road at Earth & Flax in Philadelphia, is water, mildew, insect, and UV resistant and won't degrade into microplastic dust like polyurethane. Future lettuce eaters rejoice!
